Special Education Reentry Checklist

School districts across the United States are developing and adapting reopening plans for the 2020–2021 school year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There are a wide range of factors and scenarios to consider as districts prepare for safe, effective reentry and ensure schools are equipped to accommodate student and family needs during this unprecedented time. To aid in planning efforts, Public Consulting Group (PCG) has developed the Special Education Reentry Checklist: a free resource detailing essential actions for special education departments to consider as part of their district’s larger reopening strategy.

Planning for Reopening

While there are many resources to support overall district preparations, PCG’s reentry checklist provides in-depth, detailed actions that have been customized to meet the unique needs of special education departments. This tailored resource will:

  • Complement existing guidelines to help ensure a safe and successful reentry for educators, families, and students
  • Work alongside state and federal regulations, department of education plans, and public health guidance
  • Serve as a companion to current reopening procedures in the COVID-19 landscape

Checklist to Reentry

The Special Education Reentry Checklist identifies essential actions in four critical areas for Directors of Special Education:

  • Health and Safety
  • Instruction and IEPs
  • Communication Planning
  • Budget and Finance

Together, these comprehensive planning approaches will help schools rise to the new challenges of the 2020–2021 academic year and continue to deliver special education services to meet the needs of students and their families.

With over 30 years of experience supporting more than 3,500 special education departments across the country, PCG is pleased to provide the Special Education Reentry Checklist as a free resource for school reopening.
